Kenya national women’s polo team staged a surprise win against the United States to win the Bombay Stock Exchange Cup in the Statehood Day International tournament at the Imphal grounds, Manipur State, India yesterday.

Kenya won 5-4 in a spectacular comeback after trailing the US in the first part of the match.

“I am so proud of each of the players. What a fantastic team of ladies. To come and win a tournament against three other continents with some tough teams was quite a feat” Rowena Stichbury, the Nairobi Polo Club vice-captain said.

“We are really honoured to represent Kenya and fly the flag high and to leave with the cup was a bonus.” She added while also thanking India’s ministry of tourism — Incredible India for hosting and sponsoring the tournament.

The match is organized such that each team has 10 horses for 2 chukkas and at half time they swap them to ensure no team has a horse advantage.

Both team won some prize money which they donated for conservation.
